What is Short-Term Memory Loss?
Short-term memory loss is the inability to store and recall current information for immediate use. It is normal to experience certain degrees of cognitive decline and memory loss as we age. Complications occur when short-term memory loss begins to impact daily functioning and quality of life.
Short-term memory is the ability to retain limited amounts of information in an active and available state for quick retrieval. It is divided into two categories, working memory, and short-term memory. Although experiencing short-term memory loss can be independently disturbing, the critical issues are from the underlying conditions that may be causing it. Certain underlying conditions are often treatable with early intervention. Challenges occur when underlying conditions cause severe short-term memory loss leading to problems living or functioning independently.
What causes Short-Term Memory Loss?
Several factors could potentially contribute to short-term memory loss, including aging, stress, substance abuse, brain infections, inadequate sleep, medication, or vitamin deficiency.
More severe causes of short-term memory loss are blood clots, autoimmune diseases, brain disorders, and mental health conditions such as depression or anxiety. Many of these causes are progressive and may result in long-term memory loss without proper treatment.

The symptoms of short-term memory loss are often noticeable to the individual experiencing them but are more recognized by those associated with the inflicted person.
Common symptoms of short-term memory loss include failing to remember recent events, repeatedly asking the same questions, forgetting common words, placing items in inappropriate places, losing direction in familiar areas, and experiencing mood changes without reason.

The treatment method for short-term memory loss is dependent upon the underlying condition causing it. Treatment practices include surgery, chemotherapy, medication, cognitive therapy, nutritional supplementation, substance abuse rehabilitation, and psychotherapy.
Short-term memory loss has been shown to improve when the underlying condition is properly treated. Depending on the manner of treatment, results could be rapid, as with taking medication, or they could be prolonged, as with psychotherapy.
