What are concussions?
Concussions are mild traumatic brain injuries (TBI) that affect the brain's ability to function correctly. The swelling and bruising of nerves and blood vessels produce chemical changes and temporary loss of normal cognitive and neurological functioning. Post-Concussive Syndrome can severely affect every aspect of your life when symptoms last longer than expected.
What causes concussions?
The brain is a complex soft tissue organ surrounded by cerebrospinal fluid inside the skull. Blunt force trauma, such as direct impacts, blast injuries, or intense head-shaking movements, causes the brain to shift violently within the cranium. The resulting damage causes traumatic brain injuries known as concussions. The symptoms produced by the sustained injuries affect cognitive and physical functioning.
What are the symptoms?
The symptoms of concussions range from mild to severe and may continue for days, months, or years depending on severity. The most common symptoms experienced are confusion, headache, and memory loss. Generally, amnesia refers to not remembering the cause of the concussion. Other symptoms may include nausea, vomiting, fatigue, drowsiness, or vision impairment.
Post-Concussive Syndrome (PCS) is when symptoms last beyond the expected recovery timeframe. Under normal circumstances, most symptoms will disappear within two weeks. Those diagnosed with PCS may continue to experience symptoms years after the occurrence.
How are concussions treated?
Medical practitioners are essential for correctly diagnosing and treating symptoms of concussions. Concussions are identified through cognitive examinations, neurological testing, and observations. Treatment typically includes mental and physical rest and excludes activities that aggravate symptoms. Activities to exclude or reduce are excessive reading, television, loud music, screen time, and strenuous work.
Recovery depends on numerous factors such as age, health, and past brain trauma occurrences. Undiagnosed and poor treatment plans delay recovery and add risk to the well-being of those inflicted.
